One of the World’s Toughest Mudders had Perthes as a child!

I also had hip arthroscopy in May at John Hopkins to alleviate some discomfort it was giving me. Despite this, after rehabbing from my surgery I got myself back into top condition and was able to compete in several races these past few months. Among these races , one of these races was the World’s Toughest Mudder.
I finished in the the top 5% of my qualifying Tough Mudder race to be able to participate. At the race I was able to complete over 36 miles of obstacles and running in my first venture of such a distance. I know that complications from Perthes will always be around the corner , but I’m not letting them beat me.Hopefully this serves as a small gesture of motivation and hope for kids and adults who are letting this beat them down.

Matthew’s story really gives me hope for my son. He is 9 and has just been diagnosed with Perthes in his left hip. He was a talented competitive gymnast, training 8 hours a week and loving it. He has had to give it up and is devastated. I will be telling him about Matthew. Thank you for sharing that story.
There really is light at the end if the tunnel – Perthes Disease tends to make our children more determined and many have achieved great things in Various sports despite all the difficulties that they encounter !
