Esteemed Colleagues/Friends and Acquaintances,

On September 20th, 2009 I will join 52,000 other runners in the BUPA Great North Run – the world’s biggest half marathon. This will be my first half marathon so unknown territory, but training is well underway and I’m hoping to finish in under two hours! I’m reaching out to you as I am taking on this challenge in aid of the Perthes Association.

Background

My son, Charlie was diagnosed with Perthes two years ago when he was four years old. Perthes disease is a childhood hip disorder which affects the head of the femur. In Perthes disease the blood supply to the bone at the end of the femur becomes inadequate. As a result the bone softens and breaks down resulting in pain, discomfort and restricted movement.

During the early stages of Charlie’s illness we relied on the Perthes Association for much needed advice and special loan equipment for Charlie to use. All of which was provided without question. Please help me to raise as much money as possible for this charity so that the association can continue their great work for all families touched by Perthes disease.
