Hi, This is our story

Our daughter Tilly complained of pain in her knee and walked with a limp she also was having trouble getting out of a chair as was very stiff and seem to get stuck.
We took her to the doctors, this was when she was 5 in 2007,where our GP sent us for test at High Wycombe hospital where they diagnosed her with perthes in her right hip.We were devistated Cryas you can imagine. It was very tough trying to keep a very close eye on Tilly saying what she could or couldn't do which came with many tears not just from pain.
In febuary 2008,Tilly aged 6 then, was admitted into stoke mandeville hospital for an operation an osteotomy which was a shelf support, using bone from her pelvis to try to limit the amount of damage to the femur head.
A year later things started picking up,her femur bone had strated to harden, even though very flat Tilly still have some movement, though having trouble to lift her leg over a bike is a struggle though at least on the mend able to walk further and mild running, stiil being careful though.
Tilly now 7 began to walk with a servere limp again!Angry with which we went back to the consultant 6 months early to be told after an xray that Tilly sadly has now got perthes in her left hip as wellCry.I feel so sorry for her whilst she was on the mend for her right she was able to join pro mai <mild matial arts> passing her second belt on the sunday to be told on the wednesday she can no longer go this being something she loved.
It seems like everything she really enjoys has been taking away from her.Angry
Tilly 5 weeks ago had the same operation as her right hip, she doing well, still smiling!Frin bless her keeping everyone going with her braveness. She has started violin lessons which can not be 'took away' from her,at least we have found something that she enjoys which won't effect her perthes at all.The perthes in her left hip is taking a very slow process. This is causing her pain in right hip again.Undecided Tilly enjoys swimming which really helps her with stiffness which i would highly reccommend.Frin
Well back to 6 week appointments again, will keep you posted!
Tilly is the most bravest happiest little girl i have ever known!!!!!!!!Cheesy
Always smiling, very thoughtful. Keeping everyone going.
I wish some good luck would come for her fast!FrinKiss

Dear C Winson
Sounds like Tilly is a brave little girl. I wish her all the best. The bonus for you is that I've heard that Stoke Mandeville Hospital has some experienced consultants there. They should help Tilly well. If you have a look around the forum, I have made a couple of posts about some of the experiences, I have with Bi-Lateral Perthes and the after effects. I was originally diagnosed with Bi-Lateral Perthes in 1973 aged 2. Keep Tilly away from high impact sports and exercise as much as you can, this will benefit her later on in life. It's great that she is learning the violin, this is certainly something that this dreadful condition can't stop. Keep encouraging her to achieve things that are not high impact on her skeleton, encourage her to do things that require more mental stimulation. Good luck and all the best to Tilly. Keep that smiling going.Smile!
