My 10 year old son Jack has been working through his Perthes since he was 8. After being told earlier this year that the bone was remodelling we thought that the end was insight. Cry In order to find out exactly how good Jack's range of movement in his hip might be in the future we asked for a second opinion. The very limited range of movement in his right hip and difference in his leg length was our main concern and something we have been told there might be some options open to us / Jack.

He needs to have the procedure where by they inject dye into his joint to see how badly affected it is - and how the regrowth is going. The "2nd opinion" consultant is concerned that his range of movement will be limited without surgery. He also mentioned being able to influence the leg length too. We are VERY glad we did seek a 2nd opinion as we were being told that there was nothing that could be done by original consultant.

Can anyone share any experiences of the procedure and also the possible operations that Jack might undergo? I am very keen to know recovery times etc - Jack is going into his final year at primary school (yr6)and it would be wonderful to think he might be recovered from this major operation and walking more comfortably by the time he goes to secondary school in Sept 11. Any information gratefully received as we have some tough decisions to make. Undecided

Hi,
My son Thomas will be 8 in november and was diagnosed with Perthes in his left hip in May. He is currently in a wheelchair as he has been told to put no weight on his left leg at all. Last Tuesday we saw our consultant and he is going to do the exploratory operation on Tom in September where they inject the dye into his hip. From this he will decide on whether to operate or not.
Like you we are very unsure about what is happening and what operation they will do. Any comments on these procedures or explainations would be great.Sad
