Normal topicLiving with Perthes for 43 years.

Hi All.

My name is Wayne. I'll be 50 in two weeks and was diagnosed with perthes at the age of 7 in 1972. This was in Auckland New Zealand.

The treatment I received was fairly radical at the time and mainly involved rest and traction. I was off school for 7 months.

I have always managed it well and despite a 4cm difference in my left leg and very limited lateral movement, lead a very normal life and indeed am an absolute fitness freak and it has in no way has stopped me in this.

I do get pain in the night. Its not nice but after 43 years I am used to it.

A recent visit to a specialist (had not been to one for 27 years) said that at this point I was no where near needing a hip replacement.

I'd like to use this forum for two things:

1) Chat with any older perthes sufferers and share experiences

2) Chat with any parents or people who live with perthes who are younger on how best to live with it. Parents it has definitely not been the end of the world for me, far from it, it made me a stronger person.

Look forward to hearing from you.
